Shit for thought . . .

Convention has designed the life we live, carved the pathway we are to follow, created the rules to live by, and defined our expectations. Convention tells us we are young and ignorant, and we go to school and become educated. We work, marry, have children, work more, all because that is what we are meant to do. Then we retire and grow old and eventually die. The details are what we call autonomy… but is it really freedom? Are these really choices that we make? Which job… which house… which dog…? We are not architects but builders… we choose the bricks and plaster the walls but society has designed the house long, long ago. Its design facilitates survival. Evolution. There is “no rule by which to guide our steps day by day” and yet seldom do we deviate from the path. We obey convention more than we do our mothers so are we thus products of our society before we are our parents’ children? Can we bear to be truly autonomous individuals for fear of being shunned by our innate sense of rightness, our sense of what is? Seldom is the path followed that has not been walked before and seldom is it sought. We are children, children our whole lives afraid to defy our parents, our guardians, our teacher that is our whole existence. Everything we have ever known is that which we are most afraid of disobeying, and most afraid of its all being a delusion.
