For Eswee

death of a friend
i.
Empty

Empty mind,
Empty thoughts

Empty stomach,
Empty heart

tears

ii.
Empty words,
Empty prayers

reassuring voices
condolences
embraces:

Empty

iii.
reminiscences,
recollections

cigarettes
Empty glasses
and more tears

Empty chair.

THE BOTTLE

THE BOTTLE

You are sitting,
watching,
waiting,
for the bus when
a glimpse of green
(glistening glass rolling,
slowly,
then faster
and faster,
a beer label chasing its tail
dizzied colour, a blur
of redyellowblackandwhite on
green)
comes rolling into view.

The road dips, and on its roller coaster ride it
slows;
now a pendulum,
backwards,
forwards,
oscillating,

and then stops.

It lies there
daringly
playing chicken,
and as a car approaches
emerald eyes twinkle
cheekily, laughingly,
while yours, frozen, anticipate
slamming shut
when green shrapnel, rocketing, slices
through the air
and skin.

The car whizzes by missing it by an inch.
As does the next car.
And the next.
And the one after that.

(you sit hiding behind your paperback novel,
a shield against green daggers,
and yet you still flinch at the sound
of the motorcar engines
that threaten
your false sense of security;
and you wait)

Just
as it seems
the suspense
will engulf you,
the bus approaches,
growling and hissing and spitting,
and it heaves up the incline and draws
to
a
shuddering
stop.

You board,
relieved to escape,
and f r e e f a l l
to the window at the back
as the bus lurches forwards.

Then,
pressing your pale face against
the streaky glass, you watch
the telescoping
juggler

casually bouncing emeralds
off the dazzling sun.

Waiting for the Bus

You are sitting on the bench at the bus stop. While you watch the road for a glimpse of the bus, an empty green beer bottle rolls into view. You watch it career down the unusually empty road, watching the coloured label chasing itself around the green cylinder; watch as it drifts daringly over the delineated centre to the wrong side of the road, rolling slower and slower, like a curling stone in the final moments of its fleeting journey across ice... It comes to rest towards the side of the road near the bus stop. Soon a car approaches and you wonder if it will hit the bottle; if it does, will the bottle shatter into a thousand pieces and launch a shower of green shrapnel rocketing through the air, a miniature firework display against the black tarmac? Or will it be crushed with a single crunch of a bulldozing wheel into the baking road? The car whips past, missing the bottle by scarcely an inch and leaving it oscillating gently, as does the next car, and the next, and the one after that.

More and more cars hurtle past, and you sit shielding yourself with your paperback novel, squeezing your eyes shut and flinching whenever a car draws near, imagining thick daggers of green glass slicing through the air, flying at you wildly like stray bullets and gashing out your eyes and slashing your tender skin. You remain there, however, rigid; watching; your fear numbed by curiosity, unable to take your greedy eyes off the glinting green glass.

Just as the suspense seems it will engulf you, the bus looms into sight, growling and hissing and spitting as it heaves up the incline, and draws to a shuddering stop. It too only just misses the shiny little bottle that bounces emeralds off the dazzling sun, and you board, looking relieved to escape. Then as the monstrous engine sputters back to life, coughing out billows of thick black smoke, the giant wheels roll back - scarcely an inch - and through the bus’ roaring announcement of departure you detect the inimitable sound of crunching glass. You spin around and press your pale face and hands against the streaky glass of the large window at the back of the bus as it lurches forward, and seeing the lifeless green shell lying there like cast-off bits of refuse, you weep.

I think I have too much time on my hands...

Every month SL magazine publishes a couple of "defaced covers" - refurbished versions of an existing SL cover - that people have sent in. So, being exam time and having FAR too much time to waste, I decided to do one too. Hopefully it'll make the December issue of SL. Watch this space... (or check out www.SLmagazine.co.za next month...)

I rote a poem and i didn't even know 'im...it...

My Place

This
is Me,
Making a mark .
Black ink
Blue lines
Fresh ideas,
Awaiting:
Transformation.
Change that word
Leave out that line
(Maybe this one too…)

This
is My
Place,
“I was here”
Am.
Making my mark.
Fresh
Black ink
Blue ideas
On lines
Pleading for…
Affirmation.

I have found
My place
Between blue lines.
Blue lines
And black ink
Are all that I’ve found,
While searching for
Place.

Shit for thought . . .

Convention has designed the life we live, carved the pathway we are to follow, created the rules to live by, and defined our expectations. Convention tells us we are young and ignorant, and we go to school and become educated. We work, marry, have children, work more, all because that is what we are meant to do. Then we retire and grow old and eventually die. The details are what we call autonomy… but is it really freedom? Are these really choices that we make? Which job… which house… which dog…? We are not architects but builders… we choose the bricks and plaster the walls but society has designed the house long, long ago. Its design facilitates survival. Evolution. There is “no rule by which to guide our steps day by day” and yet seldom do we deviate from the path. We obey convention more than we do our mothers so are we thus products of our society before we are our parents’ children? Can we bear to be truly autonomous individuals for fear of being shunned by our innate sense of rightness, our sense of what is? Seldom is the path followed that has not been walked before and seldom is it sought. We are children, children our whole lives afraid to defy our parents, our guardians, our teacher that is our whole existence. Everything we have ever known is that which we are most afraid of disobeying, and most afraid of its all being a delusion.
